Chapter 828: Poisoned The lead officer's expression softened slightly, feeling that the man's reasoning made sense. He unfastened the keys from his belt and prepared to move forward.
Just as he took a step, a junior officer behind him grabbed his arm. "Do you really believe them? This guy's a dangerous criminal. What if he uses this chance to escape? Who would we answer to then?" The detained prisoners scoffed at the hesitation. "Even if he's a dangerous criminal, he still has human rights, doesn't he? Besides, with so many officers here, do you really think he can escape from a police station?" The idea of escaping from this facility was laughable. With guards stationed everywhere, it would be nothing short of a fool's dream.
The lead officer shrugged off his colleague's hand. "They're right. Precisely because he's a dangerous criminal, we need to handle this carefully. If he dies, scases might lose their only witness." "But wait a second-" The junior officer tried to interject, but his colleague had already moved forward to unlock the cell door. Panic flashed briefly in his eyes, and he stomped his foot in frustration before hurriedly chasing after him. The officer unlocking the door approached Phil Walker and tried to rouse him. "Hey, wake up! Wake up!" "I told you, he's just asleep," the junior officer muttered, unconvinced. But when Phil Walker remained unresponsive no matter how loudly they called, the junior officer began to feel uneasy. Fearing that they might be exposed, he instinctively reached out to pull his colleague away.

Hurry, call an ambulance!" In the hospital hallway outside the operating room, Hayden stood with Tina and Jared, all of them clearly unsettled after being woken in the middle of the night. Across from them stood Thompson Lewis, the weary and visibly stressed police chief.
Phil Walker had been a key piece in their strategy to infiltrate the hidden family. Jared had already coordinated with the police department, ensuring that they would be informed immediately if anything happened to him.
They had assumed that Victor, true to his nature, would only act after the Luke Gill case had concluded and he'd run out of options. But it hadn't even been a day, and something had already gone wrong. Jared's face was clouded as he asked coldly, "What happened?" Thompson Lewis wiped the sweat off his forehead, utterly tongue-tied under Jared's intense questioning. He was just as baffled. How could such an incident occur under his watch? It would make him look incompetent to his superiors. Wiping his sweat on his sleeve, he turned sharply to Kim Murphy. "You were on duty today! Explain! How did this happen? How does someone get poisoned under our care?!" Kim Murphy pressed his lips together, lowering his head. "The situation happened so suddenly, I'm not sure what's going on either, Chief. You know the food is shared among everyone. If something was wrong, it shouldn't have been just him. Could it just be... a coincidence?" "A coincidence?" Hayden sneered. "What kind of coincidence? The entire detention center is fine, but Phil Walker alone gets food poisoning?" Normally lighthearted and easygoing, Hayden wasn't someone to take lightly when he got serious. As a former top agent under Jared in the X Bureau, his commanding presence was enough to make most people buckle under pressure. Kim Murphy kept his head low, neck stiff with tension, not daring to look up.
Jared's sharp gaze fell on him. "Look at me." Though Kim Murphy didn't know Jared's exact identity, the way Thompson Lewis seemed to defer to him without question made him uneasy. Reluctantly, he raised his head.
With just a glance, Jared knew Kim Murphy wasn't involved. His tone turned icy. "Were you the only one on duty tonight?" Kim Murphy hesitated before answering, "No, there was another officer. Wesley Montague." Thompson Lewis froze mid-motion, sweat still dripping as he scanned the room. His thick brows furrowed deeply, and he shoved Kim Murphy. "That's crucial information! Why are you only tellingthis now?! Where is Wesley Montague?!" Kim Murphy stumbled back a step from the force of his superior's shove. Shaking his head, he replied, "I was focused on getting Phil Walker to the hospital. I didn't notice whether Wesley followed us." Hearing this, Hayden's expression darkened. "Damn it. Could he have run off?" "Impossible!" Kim Murphy immediately countered. "I trained Wesley myself. Back when the Dyer family's two elderly members were being abused, he risked disciplinary action to save them. He would never harm Phil Walker." Thompson Lewis, who wasn't familiar with Wesley, seemed enraged by Kim Murphy's naivety. "Whether it was him or not, I want him here! Today! If anything happens to Phil Walker, do you think you can take responsibility?!" Jared's dark eyes flicked to the operating room, where the red light over the door suddenly went out. "Hayden, go with him. Search the detention center, his home-everywhere. If you can't find him, issue a warrant immediately." "Understood." Kim Murphy opened his mouth to protest, but Hayden cut him off. "I get it-you trust your guy. But the sooner we find him, the sooner we can clear his name." Hayden grabbed Kim Murphy by the arm, dragging him toward the elevator. Realizing the logic in Hayden's words, Kim Murphy nodded and stopped resisting.
As the elevator doors closed, the operating room doors opened. Tina emerged, still wearing her surgical gown.
"It was a synthetic toxin," she explained. "For most people, even the slightest exposure would cause unbearable abdominal pain. Without quick treatment, they wouldn't survive more than three hours." Thompson Lewis's face went pale. "Is he... is he going to make it?" His heart sank.
Tina removed her mask and replied, "He was brought in just in time. He's been transferred to the ICU." The chief let out a heavy sigh of relief, his tense shoulders finally relaxing. "That's good, that's good. Miss Reed, I have to say, you're incredibly capable. Your skills rival those of Spectre."

You've got court tomorrow, and we can't afford any delays." Tina was indeed exhausted. She didn't argue and allowed Jared to guide her to the car.
On the way back, Tina leaned against Jared's shoulder, her eyes shut.m Although her body felt heavy with fatigue, her mind was unusually alert.
"Victor's getting desperate." Jared brushed his cheek against her soft hair. "Good. Desperation can make people reckless." Tina turned her gaze to the window. "Even now, he hasn't revealed his trump card."
Outside, the sky remained dark before dawn, the city lights piercing through the night. Yet, there were still areas swallowed by impenetrable shadows. As Tina stared at the passing scenery, her expression grew pensive, lost in thought.
Jared's slender fingers gently stroked her hair. His deep voice broke the silence. "There's no rush. His trump card will show itself eventually." Tina murmured her agreement and said no more. She leaned into Jared's embrace and fell asleep.
